The A4988 is a full micro-stepping motor driver. It has a built-in translator for ease of operation. You can operate it from full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 step mode. The product operates a bipolar stepper motor for an output drive capacity up to 35V and ± 2A. It includes a fixed off-time current regulator, which operates on slow or mixed decay mode.
The key to the easy use of the A4988 is in the converter. The step input drives the motor one micro-step by inputting one pulse. You will not have to bother with complex interfaces to programming, phase sequence tables, or high frequency control lines. The interface is suitable for complex microprocessor when it is unavailable or overburdened.
In the micro-step operation, the A4988 chopping control selects the decay mode (slow or mixed) automatically. The mixed-decay current control scheme reduces motor noise, increases step accuracy, and reduces energy consumption. Its synchronous rectification control circuitry improves the energy use of pulse-width modulation (PWM) during operation. Circuit protection includes undervoltage lockout (UVLO), thermal shutdown with hysteresis, and crossover current protection.
